Pant Du, Penygroes

conversion of disused farm barns to a dwelling

The layout was determined by orientation and views, with the living rooms facing spectacular views over the Nantlle valley and side views towards Snowdon one way and the sea the other way. Large windows and sliding doors to the south allow full benefit to be made of the sun, with summer shading provided by the lean-to roof along the front of the living room. On the north side, the windows are kept small, and former ventilation slits are retained, with shutters fitted internally. High levels of thermal insulation are provided, using sheep’s wool and Warmcel. The roof timbers are made of I-section members, which economise in material when insulation depth is increased. Solar panels are installed on the kitchen roof and a conservatory is placed in front, both contributing to the heating of the house and the saving of bought-in energy. Natural materials are used throughout and lighting is mostly by LED lamps.
